Bringing Plein Air Studies into the Studio
With the purpose of refining skills in drawing and working from memory, we’ll make drawings and color notes outside, then use these sketches to create paintings in the studio. This allows for both on-site work and the opportunity to synthesize and simplify what we’ve observed out of doors. The process of working from field sketches is a long-standing tradition, and will sharpen facilities of observation and recall.
Students are advised to bring the standard plein air equipment for oil painting, as well as drawing and/or watercolor materials. Several canvases are recommended. Generally, we’ll plan to draw outside during the morning hours, while it’s cooler. In addition to individualized instruction, there will be frequent demonstrations of the process, from beginning to resolution of work in the studio.
